Try It Now — Prompt Rewriting

🛠️
Open this tool before you begin: Go to chatgpt.com or gemini.google.com (both are free). If you are on a low-data connection, Claude.ai also works well on mobile. You will be typing prompts directly into the chat window. Keep this lesson open in a second tab or on paper.

What You Are Doing

Below are four weak prompts that real Kenyan students and job seekers might type. Your job is to rewrite each one using what you have learned — adding context, a role, clear instructions, specifics, and tone. Then type your improved version into the AI tool and compare the results.

Step 1 — Rewrite a Job Seeker Prompt

Original weak prompt: "Help me with my CV"

Rewrite it. Include: your real (or imagined) name, degree, university, target job and company in Kenya, and what format you want. Type your rewritten prompt into the AI. Read the result — is it specific to Kenya? Does it mention KES salary ranges? If not, use a follow-up prompt to push it further.

Step 2 — Rewrite a Student Study Prompt

Original weak prompt: "Explain machine learning"

Rewrite it. Specify that you are a first-year student, that you want the explanation in simple Swahili, and that you want an analogy using something familiar — like how Safaricom's network predicts which cell tower to connect to, or how M-Pesa fraud detection works. Type it in and see how the quality changes.

Step 3 — Practise Iteration

Take the AI's answer from Step 2 and send two follow-up prompts:

  • First follow-up: Ask it to shorten the explanation to 5 bullet points only.
  • Second follow-up: Ask it to add one real example from everyday life in Kenya.

Notice how each follow-up sharpens the result without starting over.

Step 4 — Create Your Own CRISPE Prompt

Think of something you actually need help with this week — studying for an exam, writing a job application, planning a small business idea, or preparing for a presentation. Write a full CRISPE prompt for it and run it. This is your most important step because it is real, not an exercise.

🪞
Reflection: After finishing all four steps, ask yourself: Which follow-up move made the biggest difference to your result? Write down one prompting habit you want to build from today — for example, "I will always include my job target and location in any career-related prompt."
